We need to get something off our chest: we don’t really like the name “double cleansing”. It makes the routine sound annoying. Like saying you double-vacuumed your apartment. Nobody likes doing it in the first place, let alone twice!
But double cleansing is so popular, there must be something to it, right? Read on to find out! And take a short quiz at the end, so you can check your new skin cleansing chops!
A quick introduction
Double cleansing is a relatively new way of skin hygiene. It comes from K-beauty (or Korean beauty), which tends to put an emphasis on flawless, smooth skin. Here at Miss Alice we’re not too keen on “flawless”, but we can definitely get behind smooth & healthy!
Double cleansing means you will clean your face in 2 phases: the first one will use an oily cleanser and the second one a water-based cleanser. Sure, you could just use your grandma’s old soap, but that’s like using a bulldozer to clear your desk. It works, but there’s obvious drawbacks.
Better a dirty mind than a dirty face
It may be boring to some, but removing dirt from your face is the single most important step in your skincare routine. What kind of dirt are we talking about? Makeup, dead skin cells, air pollution, SPF creams, oily residue, particles stuck in your pores and so on. Tiny stuff that you often don’t even see, but can really mess up your skin.
If you’re trying to get your skin in the best shape possible, start by wiping the slate clean. And we mean that almost literally.
The benefits of double cleansing
Smooth, soft, radiant skin with fewer skin problems, all without drying out your epidermis. Double cleansing usually does this better than using a single cleaning product.
The goal is to thorougly clean your skin, right down to the pores, while maintaining skin balance and moisture. Also, if you have any skin problems, such as acne, spots and dryness, double cleansing is the first part of the solution.
How does it work?
The first phase (oily cleanser) will break down and remove any makeup, dirt, SPF creams, excess oils and other particles from your skin. Because it’s oil-based and without surfactants (detergents, basically), it won’t dry out your skin. A quality oil cleanser will remove impurities, but won’t remove too much of your skin lipids (ie. should maintain balance).
The second phase will use a water-soluble cleanser. The second cleanser will address your particular skin type or concern and should have ingredients to hydrate, smooth or gently exfoliate. Make sure you choose a quality cleanser that doesn’t dry out your skin.
The result? A thoroughly clean skin without any dryness, ready to absorb any active ingredients of your follow-up routine. Good skincare with actives is not cheap, so don’t waste it on dead skin cells and last week’s makeup.
Isn’t that too much cleaning?
If you followed this routine with agressive cleansers or soaps, then yes, your skin would dry out. We definitely don’t want that. So don’t just use a regular cleansing product twice.
That’s why you it’s so important to choose gentle, quality cleansers, if you’re going for double cleansing (which you should). A smart selection will make sure you get all the benefits without any issues. In fact, regular double cleansing will make your skin look and feel better than before!
Can I just use any oil for the first phase?
You can try, but we think you’ll find it too greasy. A quality oily cleanser contains a natural emulsifier that makes the oils easy to wash off.
If you still want to give it a shot, try with fractionated coconut oil. Also, beware of “cleansers” that are just a bunch of cheap oils thrown together. They might do the job (more or less), but your skin will almost always feel greasy after use.
Double cleansing with Miss Alice
If you’re ready to give double cleansing a try, here’s the routine you need.
You can use our own REMOVE BAD VIBES and YOUR FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT cleansers or any other brand you like. Just be sure to check the ingredients or INCI list of your products, so you’re not putting any nasty stuff on your gorgeous face.
We recommend you do this routine in the evening. Some women like to repeat it in the morning, but we don’t think it’s necessary. It’s up to you. The evening is definitely the most important, so start there.
Step 1: oil cleanser phase
Apply 2-3 pumps of REMOVE BAD VIBES on your palm and gently massage your face in circular motion. 1 or 2 minutes should do the trick, depends on how much make-up you’re using. Be gentle around the eyes.
If you’re using false eyelashes, avoid them with the cleanser, as it might make them fall off sooner. That goes for any oily cleanser.
When you’re done, wash your face with water. Since REMOVE BAD VIBES contains an amazing emulsifier, the oils will wash right off! You can also use a soft cloth or a reusable cotton pad.
Step 2: water cleanser phase
Our enzyme cleanser YOUR FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT is in powder form. Pour a small amount in your palm (approx. the size of a hazelnut), add a bit of tap water and mix it in with your finger so you get a soft paste. Apply it to your face in a circular motion and gently massage for 1 minute.
If you want more foam, you can add some more water directly on your face.
When you’re done, simply wash off with water and voila! – your skin is smooth, soft, glowing and totally clean.
Is double cleansing for you?
Regardless of your skin type, the answer is yes. We haven’t yet met a babe who didn’t benefit from a better cleansing routine. It’s a bit more work and yes, you need 2 products, but it’s usually worth it.
If you have any issues with your skin, then it’s a no-brainer. Improving skin problems always starts with improving your cleaning routine.
